<strong>fraud<\/strong>, the <strong>notary<\/strong> should check that the <strong>name<\/strong> on the <strong>document<\/strong> matches the name on the signer <strong>identification<\/strong>.\u00a0 There may be a <strong>name discrepancy<\/strong> due to the use of a <strong>nickname<\/strong>, <strong>maiden name<\/strong>, <strong>marriage<\/strong> or <strong>divorce<\/strong>, legal <strong>name change<\/strong>, or a <strong>suffix<\/strong>, such as Jr., Sr., or the Third, III.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Use_Reasonable_Care_With_Name_Discrepancy\"><\/span>Use Reasonable Care With Name Discrepancy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The notary should use <strong>reasonable care<\/strong> when there is a name discrepancy to make sure the person signing is the <strong>same person<\/strong> named in the document.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the <strong>notary certificate<\/strong> attached to the document, the safest policy is for the notary to write the full name shown on the signer&#8217;s <strong>identification<\/strong>.\u00a0 If the receiving party requires an exact match to avoid rejection, it may be shortened to match the name on the document.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For example, Robert James Smith, shown on the ID, may be shortened to Robert J. Smith, if that is the name shown on the document.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Signer_Should_Seek_Guidance_With_Name_Discrepancy\"><\/span>Signer Should Seek Guidance With Name Discrepancy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If there is a name discrepancy between the document and the name on the signer&#8217;s ID, the signer should contact the receiving party to get further instructions.\u00a0 The notary cannot provide <strong>legal advice<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Nickname_Also_Known_As_AKA\"><\/span>Nickname, Also Known As, AKA<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A common name discrepancy situation occurs when a <strong>nickname<\/strong> is shown on the document such as Bob Smith, while the ID shows the <strong>legal name<\/strong> of Robert Smith.\u00a0 The signer might sign as Robert Smith, <strong>also known as<\/strong> (<strong>AKA<\/strong>) Bob Smith.\u00a0 Or, the document preparer might decide to revise the document to remove the nickname and use the signer&#8217;s legal name.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Maiden_Name_Formerly_Known_As_FKA\"><\/span>Maiden Name, Formerly Known As, FKA<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If a document lists a <strong>maiden name<\/strong>, the signer might sign as Mary B. Smith, or Mary B. Johnson-Smith (married name), <strong>formerly known as<\/strong> (<strong>FKA<\/strong>) Mary B. Johnson (maiden name).<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Satisfactory_Form_of_Identification_for_Name_Discrepancy\"><\/span>Satisfactory Form of Identification for Name Discrepancy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The signer should show a form of <strong>satisfactory identification,<\/strong> as evidence for the notary to verify that the two names belong to the same person, such as an ID showing the <strong>date of birth<\/strong>, or <strong>marriage<\/strong> or <strong>divorce<\/strong> documents, or legal <strong>name change<\/strong> documents.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Professionally_Known_As_PKA\"><\/span>Professionally Known As, PKA<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Some celebrities, entertainers, musicians, movie stars and professional athletes might use a <strong>professional name<\/strong> when performing, but their identification shows a different <strong>legal name<\/strong>.\u00a0 The signer might sign as Norma Jean Baker, <strong>professionally known as<\/strong> (<strong>PKA<\/strong>) Marilyn Monroe.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sufficient_Minimum_Evidence_of_Name\"><\/span>Sufficient Minimum Evidence of Name<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The identification shown by the signer may contain more <strong>evidence<\/strong> than needed to verify the name, but it cannot contain less than needed.\u00a0 If the name on the document is John Quincy Adams, but the name on the ID is only John Q.
