As the storage capacity<\/strong> of micro SD memory cards<\/strong> has greatly increased, now up to 200 GB<\/strong>, they can be used as a tiny, rugged media choice to store backup files.\u00a0 A micro SD memory card is designed to be small, for use in mobile consumer devices, including digital cameras<\/strong>, video camcorders<\/strong>, smartphones, <\/strong>and tablet PCs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For mobile devices, the memory card<\/strong> is normally formatted with FAT32 file format<\/strong>, providing greater compatibility<\/strong> between operating systems<\/strong> when transferring files between a mobile device and a notebook PC or desktop computer.\u00a0 But FAT32 is an older file system that was replaced in Windows<\/strong> by the more robust NTFS file format<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>FAT32 vs NTFS File System Comparison <\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

The primary advantage<\/strong> of FAT32<\/strong> file format is compatibility across different operating systems.\u00a0 But it has several disadvantages<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

With FAT32, the maximum file size is 4 GB.<\/strong> This can be a problem if you are storing large video<\/strong> files.\u00a0 The maximum volume size is\u00a0<\/strong>2 TB<\/b>.\u00a0 FAT32 is not as reliable<\/strong> or fault-tolerant<\/strong> as NTFS.\u00a0 It does not support file security<\/strong> permissions, file compression<\/strong> or file encryption<\/strong>.\u00a0 It is less secure since all users have access to all files.\u00a0 NTFS does not have these disadvantages.\u00a0 It keeps a journal for auto-repair<\/strong> of file problems.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Format Micro SD Memory Card With NTFS<\/span><\/h2>\n

For using a micro SD memory card to backup files on a computer, format the device using NTFS<\/strong>. \u00a0 In Windows 7<\/strong>, right click on the micro SD device name in the Control Panel<\/strong>.\u00a0 Choose Format<\/strong> from the drop-down menu.\u00a0 A Format pop-up window will appear.<\/p>\n

Choose NTFS<\/strong> for the file system.\u00a0 For allocation unit size, choose 8 KB<\/strong> for an 8 GB<\/strong> memory card, 16 KB<\/strong> for 16 GB<\/strong> and 32 KB<\/strong> for 32 GB<\/strong> or larger.\u00a0 Enter a Volume Label<\/strong> for the device.\u00a0 Choose Quick Format<\/strong>, then Start<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Warning<\/strong><\/em>: Be certain you are formatting the correct device.\u00a0 Backup any files on the device before you format.<\/p>\n

<\/span>SDHC vs SDXC Memory Card<\/span><\/h2>\n

\"Sandisk<\/a>Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC<\/strong>) memory cards include storage capacities up to 32 GB<\/strong>.\u00a0 That is the maximum size supported by older card readers.\u00a0 For 32 GB and larger storage, SDXC<\/strong> (extended capacity) memory cards are used.\u00a0 Check your card reader specs to see if it supports both SDHC<\/strong> and SDXC<\/strong> memory cards.<\/p>\n

<\/span>USB Micro SD Memory Card Reader<\/span><\/h2>\n

If needed, you can buy an external USB memory card reader,<\/strong> for under $20, that supports SDHC and SDXC memory cards.\u00a0 Support for UHS-I<\/strong> is also needed for the newest high speed memory cards.<\/p>\n

Note: I use a TekRepublic<\/strong> USB 3.0 Card Reader, Model #TUC-310<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Advantages of Using Micro SD Memory Card<\/span><\/h2>\n

A micro SD memory card has no moving parts<\/strong> to break.\u00a0 A hard disk drive<\/strong> has a motor and moving parts that wear out and can break and cause a disk crash<\/strong>.\u00a0 A hard disk is susceptible to water, temperature, impact, shock, vibration, and magnetic fields.\u00a0 A hard disk provides cheaper storage and much more storage, but it will not survive harsh conditions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"Sandisk<\/a>A micro SD memory card is not susceptible to impact, vibration or magnetic fields.\u00a0 Sandisk<\/strong> devices can withstand some or all of the following conditions, see package for details:<\/p>\n

\u2022 Waterproof<\/strong>, up to 72 hours in 1 meter of water
\n\u2022 Temperature proof<\/strong>, -13 F to 185 F
\n\u2022 Shock<\/strong> and vibration proof<\/strong>, up to 500 Gs of shock
\n\u2022 X-ray proof<\/strong>, immune to airport X-rays
\n\u2022 Magnet proof<\/strong>, up to 5,000 Gauss of static magnetic field
\n\u2022 Impact proof<\/strong>, withstands drops up to 5 meters and being run over by 5-ton truck<\/p>\n

Offline Backup Field Test<\/strong>: I kept a Sandisk SDHC memory card, loaded with backup files, in a hidden location in my car for 2 years.\u00a0 Winter temperatures dropped to -10 F or below.\u00a0 Summer temperatures inside the car reached 120 F or more.\u00a0 When I tested the memory card in my PC, after 2 years of harsh temperatures and vibration in the car, it worked fine.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Data Transfer Speed and Backup Time<\/span><\/h2>\n

The effective speed of USB 2.0<\/strong> (Hi-Speed USB) is 35 MB\/sec<\/strong>.\u00a0 USB 3.0<\/strong> is about 10 X faster, up to 400 MB\/sec<\/strong>.\u00a0 The data transfer speed of a micro SD memory card is designated by speed class<\/strong>.\u00a0 Class 4<\/strong> is 4 MB\/sec<\/strong>.\u00a0 Class 10<\/strong> is 10 MB\/sec<\/strong> or faster.\u00a0 Slower speed memory cards are cheaper but are not a good choice for a large backup of many GB, because it will take longer.<\/p>\n

Newer micro SD memory cards, designed for 4K Ultra HD video<\/strong> recording, are faster, but more expensive, designated as Ultra High-Speed interface I (UHS-I<\/strong>), with speed class U1<\/strong> (10 MB\/sec)<\/strong> or U3 (30 MB\/sec)<\/strong>.\u00a0 Sandisk Extreme<\/strong> 32 GB<\/strong> micro SDHC supports UHS-I, at U3 speed, and is rated at 60 MB\/sec read<\/strong> and 40 MB\/sec write<\/strong> speed.\u00a0 Cost under $20.<\/p>\n

Tip<\/strong>: To measure data transfer speed, use speed test benchmark software like Crystal Disk Mark<\/strong> or FlashBench<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"USB<\/a>To achieve maximum speed, you will need a USB 3.0<\/strong> (SuperSpeed) port and a memory card reader<\/strong> that supports USB 3.0 and UHS-I<\/strong>.\u00a0 Otherwise, the data transfer speed will be slower and the backup will take longer.<\/p>\n

Sandisk Ultra<\/strong> and Ultra Plus<\/strong> memory cards are also available, at Class 10<\/strong> speeds and lower prices.\u00a0 They are designed for slower Full HD video<\/strong> speed.\u00a0 Sandisk Extreme<\/strong> is a better choice for faster backups.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Rugged Offline Backup<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Data backup<\/strong> to a micro SD memory card allows the user to keep a local copy of important and confidential files on a tiny removable<\/strong> memory card.\u00a0 The memory card can be easily stored as offline backup<\/a><\/strong><\/span> in a fireproof safe<\/a><\/strong><\/span> or at an offsite<\/strong> location as protection from onsite risks of data loss<\/strong> due to fire<\/strong>, flood<\/strong>, earthquake<\/strong>, explosion<\/strong>, storm<\/strong> damage<\/strong> or theft<\/strong>.\u00a0 The tiny memory card is about the size of a fingernail and is rugged<\/strong> and can be easily hidden in a secret location<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

These memory cards are not fast, like a solid state disk <\/strong>(SSD<\/strong>), but they are ideal for rugged storage of videos, music, and photos, and for backup of data files.\u00a0 To refresh data and maintain a full charge on the flash memory<\/strong> used in these devices, it is a good practice to scan all the files every 3 months.\u00a0 This can be done by scanning with an antivirus<\/strong> program or doing a file verify<\/strong> operation with a utility program like TeraCopy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"Safe<\/a>To reduce risk of data corruption<\/strong>, when finished writing files to the micro SD memory card, click on the Safely Remove Hardware<\/strong> icon or Eject<\/strong> before removing the memory card.<\/p>\n

To reduce the risk of losing the tiny micro SD memory card, use a storage wallet<\/strong> or carrying case<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
