identification cards issued after July 1, 2013, will have a <strong>gold star<\/strong> in the upper right-hand corner.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The gold star helps to verify the <strong>authenticity<\/strong> of the cards by federal agencies when the ID is used for an &#8220;<strong>official purpose<\/strong>&#8220;.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Official_Purpose\"><\/span>Official Purpose<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;Official purpose&#8221;, as defined by the Secretary of <strong>Homeland Security<\/strong>, includes presenting a state-issued driver&#8217;s license or ID card for boarding <strong>federally regulated<\/strong> commercial <strong>airline flights<\/strong> and entering restricted and semi-restricted <strong>federal buildings, military bases, <\/strong>and <strong>nuclear power plants<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If your Colorado driver&#8217;s license or ID card does not have a <strong>gold star<\/strong> in the top right-hand corner, because it was issued before July 1, 2013, you do not need to renew your card until it expires.\u00a0 Customers will be able to <strong>renew online<\/strong> or in a <strong>driver&#8217;s license office<\/strong> once their cards expire.\u00a0 Your new card will have a gold star on it.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Gold_Star_REAL_ID_Act\"><\/span>Gold Star, REAL ID Act<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The gold star indicates that the card is compliant with increased <strong>security standards<\/strong> of the <strong>REAL ID Act<\/strong> of 2005, passed by Congress.\u00a0 All Colorado cards currently in circulation are <strong>REAL ID compliant<\/strong>.\u00a0 The REAL ID standards are being phased in over several years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">REAL ID is a coordinated effort by the states and the Federal Government to improve the reliability and accuracy of state-issued identification documents, which should inhibit <strong>terrorists<\/strong>\u2019 ability to evade detection by using <strong>fraudulent identification<\/strong>.\u00a0 REAL ID implements a <strong>9\/11 Commission<\/strong> recommendation urging the federal government to \u201cset standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver&#8217;s licenses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>DHS<\/strong> is implementing REAL ID through a period of phased enforcement over the next several years.\u00a0 In particular, the date for implementing the prohibition on <strong>boarding aircraft<\/strong> travel will be set after an evaluation of earlier phases and will not occur sooner than 2016.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span
