The Cherokee Nation includes 14 counties, covering 7,000 square miles, with over 330,000 registered citizens, including over 200,000 living at-large, outside of the 14 counties. It is the largest <strong>Native American<\/strong> tribe in the United States.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Cherokees were the first Indian tribe to develop a written alphabet, known as the Cherokee <strong>syllabary<\/strong>, developed in 1821 by inventor and statesman <strong>Sequoyah<\/strong> (see image).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The government includes three branches: legislative, executive and judicial. The <strong>Tribal Council<\/strong>, with legislative power, has 17 members, elected to 4-year terms. Executive power is vested in the <strong>Principal Chief<\/strong>, also elected to a 4-year term.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The judicial branch includes the District Court, and the <strong>Supreme Court<\/strong>, with 5 judges, appointed by the Principal Chief.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The tribal code includes laws governing <strong>Cherokee tribal notaries<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cherokee_Tribal_Notaries\"><\/span>Cherokee Tribal Notaries<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cherokee-Sequoyah-syllabary.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3090\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" data-layzr=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cherokee-Sequoyah-syllabary.jpg\" alt=\"Cherokee Sequoyah syllabary\" width=\"200\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Notaries in the Cherokee Nation are appointed and commissioned to a 4-year term by the Principal Chief, or his designee. An applicant must be a <strong>citizen<\/strong> of the Cherokee Nation, at least age eighteen. The commission is sealed with the <strong>Seal of the Cherokee Nation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The notary must file his\u00a0oath of office, official signature, an impression of his notary seal, and a $1,000 bond with the <strong>Court Clerk<\/strong>, along with a $25 filing fee.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The official notary seal shall be a <strong>metal seal<\/strong> containing\u00a0the notary&#8217;s name and county of residence. All notarial acts must include the jurisdiction, date, notary signature, notary seal, and commission expiration date.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cherokee_Notary_Authority\"><\/span>Cherokee Notary Authority<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cherokee notaries have authority within the Cherokee Nation:<br \/>\nto make the proof and <strong>acknowledgement<\/strong> of deeds and other instruments,<br \/>\nto administer <strong>oaths<\/strong> and <strong>affirmations<\/strong>,<br \/>\nto demand acceptance or payment of foreign or inland <strong>bills of exchange<\/strong> and <strong>promissory notes<\/strong>,<br \/>\nto <strong>protest<\/strong> the same for nonacceptance or nonpayment,<br \/>\nto exercise other powers and duties as by <strong>law of nations<\/strong> and commercial usage may be performed by notaries public,<br \/>\nto <strong>witness<\/strong> or <strong>attest<\/strong> a <strong>signature<\/strong>, and<br \/>\nto <strong>certify<\/strong> or attest\u00a0a <strong>copy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A notarial act may be performed within the Cherokee Nation by a Cherokee tribal notary, or by an <strong>Oklahoma state notary<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Notary_Recordkeeping\"><\/span>Notary Recordkeeping<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cherokee-Nation-Seal.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3086\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" data-layzr=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cherokee-Nation-Seal.jpg\" alt=\"Cherokee Nation Seal\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For <strong>protests<\/strong> for banks, the Cherokee Nation notary shall keep a <strong>register<\/strong> in a book provided for that purpose by the bank.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Every notary shall keep a <strong>fair record<\/strong> of his official acts, and shall give a <strong>certified copy<\/strong> of any notarial record, if required, upon receipt of fee payment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At the end of the notary&#8217;s career, the notary records must be delivered to the Court Clerk.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Satisfactory_Evidence_of_Identification\"><\/span>Satisfactory Evidence of Identification<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cherokee-Nation-Citizen-ID-Blue-Card.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3093\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" data-layzr=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cherokee-Nation-Citizen-ID-Blue-Card.jpg\" alt=\"Cherokee Nation citizen ID blue card\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>The signer may be identified if that person is <strong>personally known<\/strong> to the notary,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">is identified upon oath or\u00a0affirmation of a <strong>credible witness<\/strong> known to the notary,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">or on the basis of <strong>identification documents<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-top: 85px;\"><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cherokee_Notarial_Certificates\"><\/span>Cherokee Notarial Certificates<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>1.
