Use Flattest Route to Avoid Hills<\/h1>\n

\"Flattest<\/a>Flattest Route<\/strong> is a free web application<\/strong>. It is a tool for showing changes in slope<\/strong> and elevation<\/strong> along a route, so you can see\u00a0where there are hills<\/strong>, mountains, dips and valleys.<\/p>\n

You can choose to avoid hills and steep slopes<\/strong> if you are driving, walking, jogging or biking. It can be useful for motorists\u00a0to help improve safety<\/strong> by avoiding steep hills that may be covered in snow<\/strong> or ice<\/strong>, and possible traffic accidents in winter<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Avoiding steep hills may also improve gas mileage and reduce brake wear.<\/p>\n

View Slope and Elevation Graphs<\/h2>\n

Flattest Route uses maps and elevation data from Google\u00ae Maps<\/strong>. Enter your starting and destination address for your route. Choose your mode of travel: bicycling, walking or driving. A\u00a0route will be displayed, with total distance and travel time, along with an elevation and slope profile graph of the route (see image above).<\/p>\n

The route profile graph<\/strong> shows the rising and falling slopes along the route. Drag your mouse across the graph to see the data for a specific point on the route.<\/p>\n

\"Flattest<\/a>Note: Flattest Route does not automatically find the flattest route. It is a useful manual tool for the user to view\u00a0and analyze the slope and elevation along a selected route. The user can drag and drop points along the route to check\u00a0an alternate route,<\/strong> to see which route is the flattest.<\/p>\n

The selected route is displayed using a color code<\/strong> (see legend insert) on road segments to show\u00a0the road grade<\/strong>, also called slope<\/strong>, incline, or gradient. For example, a grade of 5% is a rise of 5 vertical feet per 100\u00a0horizontal feet.<\/p>\n

The slope difficulty rating<\/strong> is based on pedestrian or bicycle\u00a0travel. But, a motorist could avoid blue, red and black\u00a0road segments to avoid steep hills, if an alternate route is available.<\/p>\n

Note:\u00a0maximum grades on highways through Colorado mountain passes range from 3% to 9%. City and rural roads in hillside<\/strong>\u00a0areas may be much steeper.<\/p>\n

Flattest Route<\/strong> was developed and user tested by coder Zivi Weinstock as a final project at Hackbright Academy, while trying to find the flattest way, navigating the steep hills of San Francisco.<\/p>\n
