They were written by <strong>Congress<\/strong> in 1789 and ratified on December 15, 1791. <strong>George Washington<\/strong> had fourteen handwritten copies of the <strong>Bill of Rights<\/strong> made, one for Congress and one for each <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/US_flag_13_stars.png\"><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft wp-image-461\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" data-layzr=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/US_flag_13_stars-300x157.png\" alt=\"US flag 13 stars\" width=\"200\" height=\"105\" \/><\/a>of the <strong>original thirteen states<\/strong>.\u00a0 These amendments guarantee a number of personal freedoms and limit the power of government.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Independence Day<\/strong>, the <strong>4th of July<\/strong>, commemorates the adoption of the <strong>Declaration of Independence<\/strong> on <strong>July 4, 1776<\/strong>, by the <strong>Continental Congress<\/strong>, declaring independence from the <strong>Kingdom of Great Britain<\/strong>, under the rule of <strong>King George III<\/strong>.\u00a0 December 15th was declared <strong>Bill of Rights Day<\/strong> in 1941, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, commemorating the 150th anniversary of the ratification of the <strong>Bill of Rights<\/strong>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Bill of Rights lists specific prohibitions on governmental power.\u00a0 The Bill of Rights was written by James Madison, in response to calls from several states for greater constitutional protection for individual liberties.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Amendment_I_Freedom_of_religion_speech_and_the_press_rights_of_assembly_and_petition\"><\/span><strong>Amendment I: Freedom of religion, speech, and the press; rights of assembly and petition<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Amendment_II_Right_to_bear_arms\"><\/span><strong>Amendment II: Right to bear arms<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Amendment_III_Housing_of_soldiers\"><\/span><strong>Amendment III: Housing of soldiers<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">No Soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the Owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Amendment_IV_Search_and_arrest_warrants\"><\/span><strong>Amendment IV: Search and arrest warrants<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Amendment_V_Rights_in_criminal_cases\"><\/span><strong>Amendment V: Rights in criminal cases<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Amendment_VI_Rights_to_a_fair_trial\"><\/span><strong>Amendment VI: Rights to a fair trial<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation;
