{"id":594,"date":"2015-01-04T15:03:14","date_gmt":"2015-01-04T22:03:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/?p=594"},"modified":"2019-07-12T22:37:15","modified_gmt":"2019-07-13T04:37:15","slug":"la-salle-expedition-louisiana-territory-1682","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/la-salle-expedition-louisiana-territory-1682\/","title":{"rendered":"La Salle Expedition, Louisiana Territory, 1682"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/La-Salle-expedition-Mississippi-Louisiana-France.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3877\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" data-layzr=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/La-Salle-expedition-Mississippi-Louisiana-France.jpg\" alt=\"La Salle expedition Mississippi Louisiana France\" width=\"320\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>La Salle Expedition, Louisiana Territory, 1682<\/h1>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Jacques de La <strong>Metairie<\/strong> was a <strong>royal notary<\/strong> at Fort Frontenac, <strong>New France<\/strong>, (now Kingston, Ontario) acting under a royal commission, granted in 1678. \u00a0Notary Metairie was chosen to accompany the famous <strong>La Salle expedition<\/strong>, down the Colbert (<strong>Mississippi<\/strong>)\u00a0 River, to the Gulf of Mexico.\u00a0 Fort Frontenac was built by La Salle in 1673 and named after the governor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Notaries accompanied explorers and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/notary-with-conquistador-onate-new-mexico-1598\/\"><strong>conquistadors<\/strong><\/a><\/span> in the early exploration of North and South America.\u00a0 The <strong>first notary<\/strong> in North America, <strong>Rodrigo Escobedo<\/strong>, accompanied <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/notary-with-christopher-columbus\/\"><strong>Christopher Columbus<\/strong><\/a><\/span> in 1492 and was Secretary of the fleet.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the 1500s, notaries accompanied <strong>Spanish conquistadors<\/strong>.\u00a0 They kept records and notarized declarations of claims on new territories.\u00a0 In addition to seeking land and treasure, the explorers were engaged in spreading the <strong>Catholic religion<\/strong> among the <strong>native Indians<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ren\u00e9-Robert <strong>Cavelier<\/strong>, Sieur de <strong>La Salle<\/strong>, (1643-1687 AD) was born in Rouen, France.\u00a0 An estate nearby, known as <strong>La Salle<\/strong>, was owned by the <strong>Cavelier<\/strong> family.\u00a0 <strong>La Salle<\/strong> immigrated to Montreal in 1667 and engaged in several expeditions in the region.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">La Salle was given a mission to explore the Colbert (<strong>Mississippi<\/strong>) River and take possession of <strong>Louisiana<\/strong>, under the orders and letters patent of <strong>King Louis XIV<\/strong> of <strong>France<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Notary Metairie<\/strong> recorded the details of the expedition.\u00a0 The official account of this expedition is known as the <strong>Proc\u00e8s Verbal<\/strong>.\u00a0 The original <strong>manuscript<\/strong> is deposited in the <strong>archives<\/strong> of the Ministere de la Marine et des Colonies in <strong>Paris<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Claiming_Louisiana_for_France\"><\/span>Claiming Louisiana for France<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The journey began in December 1681, with 23 <strong>French Canadians<\/strong> and 18 Indians, when there was <strong>ice<\/strong> on the rivers.\u00a0 Twelve <strong>canoes<\/strong> were used, and at times the canoes were dragged across the ice.\u00a0 Distances were measured in <strong>leagues<\/strong>.\u00a0 Along the way, the expedition met with many <strong>Indian tribes<\/strong> and made peace by offering gifts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On April 9, 1682, at the western mouth of the <strong>Mississippi River<\/strong> (now Venice, LA), <strong>La Salle<\/strong> solemnly took possession of the entire Mississippi Valley for France, naming the territory <strong>Louisiane<\/strong> after King Louis XIV.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On a high point of ground, the expedition prepared a column and a <strong>cross<\/strong>. The <strong>arms of France<\/strong> were attached to the column with the name of King Louis and the date.\u00a0 A ceremony was held, with a <strong>salute of firearms<\/strong>, and La Salle erected the column, in the name of <strong>King Louis XIV<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The territory claimed was all the land along the Mississippi River, and all the rivers that flow into the Mississippi, including all the nations, people, towns, villages, mines, minerals, fisheries, streams and rivers, ports, and harbors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Louisiana<\/strong> extended from the Gulf of Mexico, north to Canada, and from the Ohio and Mississippi River, west to the <strong>Continental Divide<\/strong> of the <strong>Rocky Mountains<\/strong>.\u00a0 (Eastern <strong>Colorado<\/strong> was part of <strong>French Louisiana<\/strong> and later <strong>Spanish Louisiana<\/strong>.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A <strong>cross<\/strong> was attached to a tree.\u00a0 A lead plate was buried at the foot of the tree, with an inscription in Latin of the land claim.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Then <strong>La Salle<\/strong> said that <strong>King Louis<\/strong> would claim no land for his crown without establishing the <strong>Christian religion<\/strong> there.\u00a0 A <strong>cross<\/strong> was erected, songs were sung, and the ceremony concluded with <strong>Vive le Roi!<\/strong> (Long Live the King!)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">La Salle demanded an act by the <strong>notary<\/strong>, as required by law.\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>Notary Metairie<\/strong> wrote an act of possession of the territory.\u00a0 The key members of the expedition <strong>signed<\/strong> and <strong>witnessed<\/strong> the document.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"French_Colonists_in_Louisiana\"><\/span>French Colonists in Louisiana<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>La Salle<\/strong> returned to <strong>France<\/strong> in 1684 and was granted command of <strong>Louisiana<\/strong>.\u00a0 He sailed with four ships and 320 <strong>French colonists<\/strong> back to Louisiana.\u00a0 In 1685, they missed the mouth of the Mississippi River, and landed 400 miles further west on the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/notaries-in-the-republic-of-texas-1836-1846\/\"><strong>Texas<\/strong><\/a><\/span> coast, building <strong>Fort Saint Louis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">La Salle was killed in Texas in 1687 in a mutiny by members of his exploration party.\u00a0 The colony only lasted for 3 years.\u00a0 Most colonists were killed by Indians and disease.\u00a0 Some sailed back to France.\u00a0 The Spanish destroyed the remains of the fort in 1688.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>New Orleans<\/strong> was founded in 1718.\u00a0 <strong>St. Louis<\/strong>, founded 1764, became a growing city and gateway to the West.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1803, <strong>Napoleon Bonaparte<\/strong> sold <strong>French Louisiana<\/strong>, a part of <strong>New France<\/strong>, to the United States in the <strong>Louisiana Purchase<\/strong>, when <strong>Thomas Jefferson<\/strong> was President.\u00a0 <strong>Zebulon Pike<\/strong> then explored <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/colorado-day-statehood-august-1-1876\/\"><strong>Colorado<\/strong><\/a><\/span> in 1806, on a mission from Thomas Jefferson.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From 1821 until 1880, wagon trains traveled from <strong>Independence, Missouri<\/strong> on a 900-mile, 3-month journey along the <strong>Santa Fe Trail<\/strong>, to <strong>Santa Fe<\/strong>, in <strong>New Spain<\/strong>.\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/bents-fort-colorado-1842\/\"><strong>Bent&#8217;s Fort<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, in southeast Colorado, on the <strong>Arkansas River<\/strong>, was a <strong>trading post<\/strong> where travelers stopped for fresh horses and supplies, and <strong>Cheyenne<\/strong> and <strong>Arapaho Indians<\/strong> traded <strong>buffalo<\/strong> skins for goods.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"French_Law_in_Louisiana\"><\/span>French Law in Louisiana<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>French law<\/strong> is based on <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/roman-law-influence-on-notaries\/\"><strong>Roman Law<\/strong><\/a><\/span>.\u00a0 <strong>French notaries<\/strong> are empowered to prepare certain legal documents as well to <strong>notarize<\/strong> documents.\u00a0 <strong>Louisiana<\/strong> <strong>notaries<\/strong> still follow the French law and are authorized to draft certain legal documents.\u00a0 In all other states, the laws are based on <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/english-common-law-notaries\/\"><strong>English common law<\/strong><\/a><\/span> and notaries have much less legal authority.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While the <strong>Spanish<\/strong> influence on <strong>Colorado<\/strong> is strong, from 1682 until 1803, eastern <strong>Colorado<\/strong> was part of <strong>Louisiana<\/strong>.\u00a0 There are places and streets with French names, including Bijou, Cache la Poudre, Florissant, Fremont County,\u00a0La Salle, Lafayette, Lamar, Laporte, Louisville, Montrose, Platte River, Purgatoire River, Saint Vrain, and others.\u00a0 <strong>Laporte<\/strong>, near Fort Collins, was first settled by <strong>French-Canadian<\/strong> fur trappers in 1828.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Notary Metairie<\/strong> traveled a great distance, during winter, by canoe down the <strong>Mississippi River<\/strong> with the <strong>La Salle<\/strong> expedition and wrote important documents to record the historic journey and to claim <strong>Louisiana<\/strong> for <strong>France<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:
